My experience in photography includes both analog and digital formats, as well as photo manipulation skills learned in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Countless photography courses have developed my knowledge on composition, lighting, exposure and color. Nature and travel are indefinite sources of inspiration. I will often incorporate my own photographs into my digital art and mixed media pieces.

The “Tense” Collection

The story behind this film photography collection is a long one, but worth the read. I had been thinking of getting back into film photography. Without having told anyone this, I was gifted a film camera. I didn’t get the hint until only about a week later when I was randomly given a bag of of film rolls, from someone who had no idea about my new camera or my desire to take photos. At that point, I was like, OK universe, I hear you. And my project began.

I spent about a year, taking random landscape photos to fill up the 24 exposure roll of film. I then carefully rewound it by hand and took another 24 pictures, deliberately double exposing them. This time I purposely took pictures of cityscapes and people as a contrast to nature.

I left this project in limbo, as I didn’t really have an end goal for it…. until I was accepted as an artist for Fort Calgary and Art Spot’s collaborative “Flip the Script” exhibition, an initiative to re-frame/broaden the narrative of Fort Calgary’s history. Artists were challenged to create original works of art from a more current perspective. It was then that I felt the need to get that roll of film developed. Below is what came out!

Although I started this project, which I now call “Tense” well before I even knew about Flip the Script, I intuitively know that this is its purpose. It was so fulfilling for this to come full circle and see my photographs framed and gracing the walls inside Fort Calgary-now called “The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland”.
